What this tool does
There's one universal answer to "who do I notify" — but the useful answer depends on which IDs and accounts you hold. This tool takes what triggered your name change and the accounts you check off, then builds an ordered, checkable list. It explains why each item sits where it does, links the official page, and remembers what you've finished.
The order everyone follows
- Social Security first — the DMV and passport verify against it.
- Driver's license / state ID, then passport.
- USPS, voter registration, employer, IRS.
- Banks, then insurance and everything else.

Frequently asked questions
Who do I need to notify after a name change?
In order: Social Security, then the DMV, passport, USPS, voter registration, employer, IRS, banks, and insurance. This tool filters that master list down to only the accounts you actually hold and keeps them in the correct order.
Why does the order matter?
Social Security must be first because the DMV and the passport agency verify your new name against the SSA record. Update those before SSA and they can reject your application.
Does the checklist save my progress?
Yes. As you check items off, your progress is saved in your browser, so you can close the page and come back to it. You can also print it or copy a link to your exact list.
Is it free?
Yes — no signup, no email, no fee. Your selections stay in your browser.
