Name-Change Cost & Steps Calculator
Pick your state and situation for your exact filing fee, court, forms, and ordered steps.
What this tool does
This calculator turns the two things you know — your state and why you're changing your name — into the full plan: the government filing fee, the exact court, whether you must publish a newspaper notice, your likely timeline, the official forms to download, and the steps in order. Where a state sets fees by county, it shows the range and points you to the county clerk.
How it works
- Choose your state and situation.
- The tool reads verified data for that state and your change type.
- You get fee, court, publication rule, timeline, forms, and ordered steps.
- Hand off to the Who-To-Notify Checklist and the Timeline Generator.
Why the order matters
After a court signs your order (or after you get a certified marriage certificate or divorce decree), you update your IDs in a fixed sequence. Social Security comes first — for free with Form SS-5 — because the DMV and the US passport agency both verify your new name against the Social Security record. Do them out of order and you can get turned away.
